Ride the NETT Notes

Passing along some of the critical information related to the ride. Please do read this full note. Feel free to contact us if you still have any questions.

First off, there are no SAG or support vehicles. If you become stranded on the course you are responsible for finding your own way back. There are towns spaced about every 8-12 miles on the full route but these are very small towns. A couple don't even have a convenience store. The ride takes place primarily on the NETT trail which should be close to impossible to get lost on. It's on old railroad bed which means there are no abrubt turns of any kind in the trail. We will have arrows for circle back "lollipops" and to get back on the trail for town detours. We will not be providing printed maps or cue sheets but they will be available online Friday night. Feel free to print them off yourself if needed for peace of mind.

The ride starts at 9:00am, mandatory riders' meeting will be at 8:45. Please arrive in plenty of time to sign your waivers and to have your gear ready by the riders' meeting. We will be passing out bib numbers but this is not a race. We will use the bib numbers and timing software to keep track of who is still out on the course. Make sure to check in when you are done with your ride. Pleae Email or text us if you don't come back to the staging area for some reason (include your bib #).

The staging area is at the intersection of Farmersville Parkway and Main St. Enter Farmersville Parkway from Hiway 78 and you will be directed to your parking space. Map link will be at end of this note.

We have a "Team Challenge" going for the parade lap of the ride. The teams with the most riders (based on kits) will lead the group out of Farmersville. The parade lap will circle downtown Farmersville and up Main St to FM 2194 to CR 656 which intersects the trail. This is about a 2.5 mile lead out which should allow the field to stretch out a bit before getting on the trail. The trail is much too narrow for everyone to start on it in mass.

From this point on it primarily a matter of riding the NETT as far out as you wish and then returning on your own. We will be routing most of the course out and back all on the NETT. Exceptions will be notated on the Towns List below. Online maps and the Spinistry app will be updated with final routes Friday evening. Because of the rains we are double checking routes one last time during the day Friday.

Towns in order going out from Farmersville:

Merit: No facilities. Some of the rail ballast has been scraped away around Merit which means there is the potential for mud on the trail in a couple of spots. Those stretches are pretty short so keep an eye out just in case. We will try to verify while scouting on Friday.

Celeste (28 miles round trip): You will know you are in Celeste by the huge cracks in the asphalt used to surface the trail. There is an Exxon sation/Convenience store. This is the turn around point for our Kiddie Train route. We ask that riders wait for all of the riders to finish this leg before returning. We want to minimize two way traffic as much as possible. We will have some sort of all clear signal worked out which will be communicated during the riders' meeting.

Wolfe City (44 miles round trip): Wolfe City is probably the largest town after Farmersville. There is a convenience store in town but it is a few blocks off the trail. We will have signage to direct you toward the store then back to the trail. The town is also working to make some facilities available which will be announced at the riders' meeting. Riders turning around here will be directed down a short lollipop route of dirt roads before re-entering the trail. Again, to minimize two way traffic.

Ladonia (70 miles round trip): Ladonia is offering us the City Hall/Town Square/Gazebo complex. City Hall will have restrooms and water available. There is a Gazebo right outside the City Hall where the pie stop as well as Dennis Welpe's grilled cheese sandwiches will be available. Riders turning around here will also do a short lollipop before getting back on the trail.

Pecan Gap: No facilities arranged. There is a catfish joing in town open on Saturdays. You don not want to go beyond Pecan Gap without a tubeless setup or lots of spare tubes and air. Pecan Gap and on is probably the prettiest section but it was also some of the most overgrown. Lot's of freshly cut thorns on the ground for the rest of the route and most of it will be hit twice.

Ben Franklin: No facilities arranged, no facilities available except a couple of churches down the road. Ben Franklin is where the official route will go off the NETT to avoid a dangerous bridge crossing over the Sulphur River. Riders will turn left on the paved road through Ben Franklin (Hiway 38) and follow a combinatin of pavement and dirt roads for several miles before connecting back to the trail. This connection will be finalized on Friday. We have to verify if dirt roads are passable or not.

Roxton (100+ miles round trip): Lollipop to be verified but current route is just over 100 miles. Original route was mostly dirt roads back to Celeste but now riders will circle back to Ben Franklin and return on the NETT the entire way from there. This will help to establish trail in some of the newly reclaimed sections. Roxton is opening it's Community Center to us for restrooms and water. There is also a small convenience store and a couple of restaurants. There is also a railroad museum with restrooms and water.
